"An Inside Perspective"

December 2013

My Dear Family in Christ,

Ever precious greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ!

It is always an adventure for me to see what type of new plant “pops up” on the grounds. I am constantly finding things growing that I know I did not plant and for which I had no seeds. I usually have to wait a bit to let a new plant define itself, although I can often identify it from a very young sprout.

This spring I found what looked to me like a little tree sprout. You probably have never thought about this but they do not allow trees in prison. There are a few reasons but I suspect the main one is that trees impede the view of the officers in the guard towers. The officers must always have a clear view of all the walls and grounds for security reasons, thus no trees are usually found in prisons.

Anyway, I found this little sprout and I was determined that I was going to nurture it until I was sure what it was. After a few weeks, it was doing so well that I ran inside the Greenhouse and called Howie the elder of the rascals. I asked him to come outside and take a look. Howie has been in the business for thirty years or more. My sprout wasn’t yet but three inches tall and he knew immediately that it was a Silver Maple. We were ecstatic, like little kids who had just laid hold of their favorite candy!

It’s funny but everything in prison takes on a whole new meaning and attains additional value because everything in here is so scarce. A Silver Maple---are you kidding me! This was a real live discovered treasure! Well, over the course of the spring and summer we nurtured this puppy with tender loving care like it was a new born baby. By the fall it was about three feet tall but in “our” hearts it was nothing short of a giant redwood!

We surmised after lengthy speculation that the seed was brought into the prison by unorthodox means. We postulated that the geese were the likely culprits. We supposed they had unwittingly smuggled the seed in by way of internal transport, the gastrointestinal method as it were. Then, in the process of time and in the due course of nature said seed was deposited accordingly in our garden. It’s nature’s way.

After continued conjecture, I determined that the seed could have come from many places. It was spring and the geese were flying north where had they been a day or two before? The seed might have been from Florida or the Gulf Coast, right? Who really knows but no doubt it was in something that they ate. I still to this day wonder where it came from. I marvel at how the Providence of God chose that particular seed to land in my garden.

It is written, “He that observeth the wind shall not sow; and he that regardeth the clouds shall not reap. As thou knowest not what is the way of the spirit, nor how the bones do grow in the womb of her that is with child: even so thou knowest not the works of God who maketh all. In the morning sow thy seed, and in the evening withhold not thy hand: for thou knowest not which shall prosper, either this of that, or whether they both shall be alike good." (Ecc. 11:4-6)

Jesus said, “...the seed is the Word of God.” (Luke 8:11) As Christians we don’t need lengthy speculation about where the seed may have come from. Without continuing conjecture we know the Word is from the heart of our Father in Heaven. God’s Word is the very overflow of His heart intentionally and with purpose revealed to us. (Matt. 12:34)

Yes, our seed is from Heaven and it is the very living Word of God. It is not our logical reasoning, nor our fanciful sayings, neither is it our persuasive arguments that give Life. That is why our speech must always be peppered with the living Word. Beloved, when you spread the eternal seed you never know what will “pop up.”

God has endless means to plant His word wherever He wants it to grow. Hebrews 4:12 teaches us that the Word is “living and active.” In John 6:63 the Lord Himself schools us that His Words are “spirit and life.” Jeremiah 1:12 shows us that God is “watching over His Word to perform it.” So also, Isaiah 55:10-11 teaches us His Word “shall not return unto Him void (empty) but shall accomplish what He desires and achieve the purpose for which He sent it.”

I could go on and on about how the Word “effectually worketh” (I Thes. 2:13), but you get the point. Just like with the goose delivering the Silver Maple seed to me in a very unique way, so too, God’s Word goes to the four corners of the earth. In the Revelation God even has an angel flying around preaching the Everlasting Gospel! (Rev. 14:6)

He deposits His seed accordingly wherever He wants it. In the process of time it will sprout. It’s God’s way. It’s always an adventure to see what new Christian “pops up” in our lives. Yes, at times we have to wait and let them define themselves, but usually you can see Christ in them while they are but a sprout. If you are not sure though, call an Elder of the saints!

A new believer---are you kidding me! This is a real live discovered treasure! Do you get ecstatic when someone is saved? Beloved, you ought to be nurturing that puppy! Preach the gospel all the time and watch closely because you never know when the seed will...
